Sara loves calcio more than anything else in the world. When she was young, she spent all of her free time chasing a ball, and the Topolini in Barcola on Trieste’s boardwalk was her favourite playing field. She was the only girl who played with the boys, but she didn’t feel out of place. The only difference between her and her friends was that she didn’t dream of becoming a footballer when she got older—after all, women’s calcio was so far in the shadows that it was difficult to imagine.
Captain of both the Italian national women’s team and the Juventus women’s team, Sara makes our hearts race as she recounts her journey from the very beginning. Recalling her love for the sport, challenges faced, victories and defeats, she teaches us that to become a real champion, you need grit and tenacity, the desire to give your all, the courage to overcome hurdles and that the best results are achieved when you’re united.
